Math Problem of the Week

There will be a new problem each week for you to solve. Anyone who submits their answer and explains how he/she got the answer will be put in our Math Problem of the Week raffle. Check back next week for all correct answers and explanations. Good luck!

Problem of the week for 2/1/10

Broad Brook school is going to install new playground equipment. The planners measured out a square section of land that measured 50 feet on each side. They need to know the area of the space in order to purchase the correct amount of equipment. They also plan to put a fence around the perimeter of the area. Find both the area and perimeter of this space.

Elizabeth wants to give her sister, Jane, some of her rocks from her collection. She decides to give Jane one-third of her rocks. She has 18 rocks. How many rocks will Jane get? Write your answer as a whole number and a fraction.
